A village perched on a slab of rock that seems suspended in the void. A fortress that is not just a monument — it is the culmination of centuries of history. San Leo. You see it from afar as you drive through the Valmarecchia valley — and you already know this won’t be just another day trip.
This is not your typical medieval postcard village. It is not an open-air museum. It is a place that grabs you by the throat before you even set foot inside its walls. Because San Leo has something few places have: a physical presence, almost mineral. The rock it is built on is not the foundation — it is part of the architecture itself.
Summer 2026. If you are coming to Rimini this year and want a trip away from the noise, the crowds, the rhythm of the seafront, you have two choices: stay on the beach — or take the car and come up here. I already know which one I’d pick.

Where is San Leo and how to get there from Rimini
San Leo is in the Rimini hinterland, about 40 kilometres from the coast. By car from Rimini it takes between 40 and 50 minutes — depending on traffic and how many times you stop to look at the view.
Take the SS258 Marecchia road towards Novafeltria. The road follows the Marecchia river and snakes into the hills, leaving the plain and the chaos behind. After Torello, the valley narrows. The curves get tighter. And at some point — you see it.
San Leo is up there. On a boulder that looks like a giant planted it. A shape against the sky that makes you want to stop the car and take a photo immediately.
The easiest parking is at the entrance of the village, just before the walls. From there you go in on foot. And from there, the magic begins.
The Fortress of San Leo: everything you need to know
The heart of San Leo is its fortress. You cannot come here and not go inside.
The Fortress of San Leo occupies the highest point of the rocky slab. It is imposing. It towers over you from a distance, but when you are inside — when you walk across its courtyards and look down — you understand why it is considered one of the finest examples of Renaissance military architecture.
The current structure is the work of Federico da Montefeltro and his military architect, Francesco di Giorgio Martini. He — Martini — did something that still leaves you speechless: he fused the rock with the building. The walls do not rest on the cliff — they are the cliff.

How to visit the Fortress
The tour starts from the Piazza d’Armi, the large courtyard that welcomes visitors right after the entrance. From here, following the stairways and passing through a Gothic portal, you reach the courtyard of the medieval keep.
Inside you will find: the great tower with cannons, halberds, crossbows and armour; the noble floor with Renaissance furnishings; a collection of 20th-century weapons; and the famous cell called “il pozzetto” where Cagliostro was imprisoned for four years.
What to see in San Leo beyond the fortress
The Cathedral of San Leone
One of the most important Romanesque churches in Romagna, built between the 7th and 9th centuries. Free entry. The interior is bare, essential — and it is precisely this simplicity that makes it powerful.
The Medici Palace
One of the rare examples of Medici architecture outside Tuscany. Worth a stop for its façade and inner courtyard.
The incredible history of San Leo: from the Romans to Cagliostro
Giuseppe Balsamo, known as Cagliostro. Physician, alchemist, adventurer. Condemned for heresy by the Holy Inquisition in 1791. Imprisoned at San Leo for four years. Died here in 1795.
His cell is still there. It is called “il pozzetto” — a narrow, damp, dark space in one of the keep’s towers. Nothing touristy about it. It has not been “set up.” It is exactly as it was. And when you walk in, you feel the weight of those years.
