Rimini as you’ve never seen it: a concierge’s diary

The Secret Hinterland of Rimini: Villages, Castles, and Dreamy Landscapes

Yesterday, I made a promise I shouldn’t have

“Cristian, what’s behind those hills?”

Marco, a guest from Milan, asked me this yesterday morning while we were having breakfast on the terrace of the Aqua Hotel. He was pointing toward the Rimini hinterland — that stretch of hills you can see just beyond the city.

“Nothing special,” I replied instinctively, “just a few little villages…”

But as soon as the words left my mouth, I felt guilty.

Because I lied.

Behind those hills lies the most authentic side of Rimini — the one that takes your breath away.

I thought back to the first time I visited the Fortress of San Leo, and how small I felt in front of that mighty structure, which seems to rise directly from the rock.

Or that autumn morning in Verucchio, when the sunlight filtering through the mist made the castle look like it was floating between sky and earth.

That’s why I decided to write this article.

To make up for that little lie I told over breakfast.

To tell you what’s really hidden beyond those hills you see from the beach.

Don’t expect the usual tourist itinerary.

I’m taking you with me to the places I visit when I need to remind myself why I love this land so much.

The first stop?

A castle where even the Malatesta — the lords of Rimini — used to hold their breath…

The Fortress of Verucchio: A Balcony Over History

Veduta panoramica della Rocca Malatestiana di Verucchio, affacciata sulla Valmarecchia, uno dei borghi più affascinanti dell’entroterra di Rimini.
The Malatesta Fortress of Verucchio, one of the most fascinating fortresses in Romagna, offers a breathtaking view over the Valmarecchia valley and the Rimini hinterland.

The fortress rises in a dominant position over the village of Verucchio, like a stone sentinel still guarding the secrets of the Valmarecchia.

From here, the gaze embraces a breathtaking view: on one side, the Adriatic Riviera shimmering on the horizon; on the other, the gentle hills rolling all the way to San Marino.

Thanks to its strategic location, Verucchio commands the Valmarecchia all the way to the sea, making it an important control point for the territory, including Rimini.

It’s no surprise that the Malatesta chose it as one of their most prestigious residences.

When you pass through the gate of the Malatesta Fortress, you enter one of the best-preserved castles in Italy, where every stone tells centuries of history.

Climbing to the highest part of the fortress rewards you with a view worth every step: a 360-degree panorama over the valley, the same one the lords of Rimini admired centuries ago.

But Verucchio hides other treasures.

Just a few steps from the fortress, the Archaeological Museum houses important artifacts from the Villanovan civilization, witnesses of a history that predates the rule of the Malatesta.

Before you leave, take a break at the Convent of San Francesco.

In its silent cloister, where time seems to have stopped, you can still breathe the atmosphere of peace that once attracted even the powerful Malatesta.

But our exploration of the Rimini hinterland has only just begun.

The next stop takes us to San Leo, where an even more impressive fortress awaits us…

San Leo: where nature and man created a masterpiece

The majestic Fortress of San Leo, one of the most fascinating castles in Romagna, with a breathtaking view over the Valmarecchia and its medieval village.

The fortress seems to rise directly from the rock, perched on a limestone spur overlooking the Valmarecchia.

This place has something truly evocative, so much so that Dante Alighieri passed through it, as evidenced by numerous artistic interpretations over the centuries.

Park in Piazza Dante Alighieri, the beating heart of the village.

First stop: the Pieve of Santa Maria Assunta, a historic building overlooking the main square. Just a few steps away, you’ll find the Cathedral of San Leone, another important religious building that tells centuries of history.

But the real jewel of San Leo is the fortress, redesigned by order of Federico da Montefeltro.

A place of art and mystery, where you can visit the cells that once held the famous Count of Cagliostro.

The Diocesan Museum, with its precious collection, completes the village’s cultural itinerary.

If you enjoy walking in nature, I suggest two experiences: the trail leading to the Rocca di Maioletto, which offers spectacular views over the valley, and a detour to the Convent of Sant’Igne, a peaceful spot just minutes from San Leo.

And if you think the Rimini hinterland has already shown you its best, wait until you discover Pennabilli, where poet Tonino Guerra created the unique open-air museum “The Places of the Soul”…

Pennabilli: where the journey becomes an experience of the soul

The atmosphere of Pennabilli transforms you from a tourist into a traveler, inviting you to discover a different way of exploring the Romagna hinterland.

Here, “I Luoghi dell’Anima” (“The Places of the Soul”), the open-air museum envisioned by poet Tonino Guerra, offers a unique experience.

You won’t find the usual tourist attractions, but rather artistic installations scattered throughout the village that invite you to slow down, observe, and reflect.

The Bell of Lhasa, a symbol of the millennia-old bond between Pennabilli and Tibet, resonates through the hills creating moments of deep emotion.

For science lovers, the “Mateureka” museum of calculation immerses you in the magic of mathematics, making even the most complex concepts accessible and fascinating.

[For those with more time] It’s worth taking a detour to Petrella Guidi, a village in the Upper Valmarecchia where silence still holds priceless value.

“The Balconies of Piero” will gift you the same views that inspired the works of Piero della Francesca.

Before heading back to the coast, stop by one of the recommended local trattorias: Osteria al Bel Fico in Pennabilli, or if you’re nearby, Locanda dell’Ambra and Trattoria Bar da Tapir in Talamello, where you can savor the genuine flavors of the Rimini hinterland.

As you make your way back to Rimini, you’ll understand why this inland territory deserves to be discovered slowly and attentively.

But before we wrap up, here are a few practical tips to help you plan your journey…
